Choosing a location for a retirement home for a married couple

Posted on: 1 July 2016

If you have a partner that you have been living with for many years, you'll be eager to find a retirement home that allows you to spend your sunset year together enjoying each other's company. Here are some things to look for in a retirement home.

Does it have associated higher care sites?

Some retirement villas have connected higher care facilities such as aged care beds and nursing home spaces. As you both age you may find that you have differing medical needs. If one of you needs a more dedicated, high care facility whilst the other can still live independently it can be nice to be able to walk and visit each other each day. This can be very valuable as you may get to a point where you don't like to drive any more. Often the recommendation is to find a space that suits the sickest spouse, but this can change over time so flexibility is key.

How much space do you need?

If you both like to have a bit of space to yourself it's good thing to look for a layout where you can spend some time apart. This could include a second bedroom, a courtyard or a second living area. This can be a great thing if you like to spend a little time each day by yourself doing quiet activities such as knitting, reading or finishing the crossword. It can also be nice to have a space that you can have your grandchildren or other family come for visits so a second bedroom can often be good.

Does it have a range of activities you can both enjoy?

It's important to consider both people's interests when looking at the facilities of a retirement home. For example if the wife is an avid yoga practitioner, but the husband is an enthusiastic chess player it's a good idea to find a facility where both of those needs are met. Due to the long life expectancy of women, retirement homes can often have more activities for women, but it's important for long term happiness to have both partners' interests covered.

If you are looking for a retirement home which suits a married couple, it's important to remember that you need to look for a place that serves both partners physical and social needs. It can be good to tour a number of homes to find one that suits you both.
